XII Lecture Series Fundación Ramón Areces on "International Accounting Regulation & Corporate Governance"

The Lecture series on International Accounting Regulation & Corporate Governance, organized jointly with the “UAM-Auditores Madrid” Chair in Corporate Financial Reporting, aims to bring together professionals, academics, students and general public interested in Financial Economics and Accounting, to debate about existing international accounting regulation and firm corporate governance issues. To that end, we invite expert academics and regulators to present different, and often controversial, points of view on the role of financial information, the advances in accounting regulation and in corporate governance, and the future challenges to achieve more efficient capital markets.

Conference 2

October 26th 2023, at 19h: Prof. Katherine Schipper, Duke University

"Audit Materiality Judments: Insights from Regulators"

ABSTRACT - Recent data obtained from the PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board) indicate that materiality in audits is not set by applying simple rules (e.g. 5% of pre-tax profit), but is associated with different figures of results, sales and assets, depending on the size and performance of the audit clients. High materiality is associated with fewer audit hours and audit fees, but also with fewer adjustments suggested by auditors and subsequently with a higher probability of material misstatements in the financial statements. Prof. Schipper will discuss the US evidence on value judgments in relation to materiality, and their consequences.
