The growth of urbanization has been dramatic in the last
\ndecade. Indeed, it is expected that 70 percent of the world’s population
\n will live in cities by 2050. This rate has increased the pressure for
\nadjusting the actual infrastructures, and investing in new ones, in
\norder to minimize the social and environmental impacts. To manage this
\nissue, an increasing number of cities around the world is adopting the
\nconcept of \u00absmart cities\u00bb, with economic and society implications. In
\nparallel, the concept of social responsibility implies an equilibrium
\nbetween economic and society interests within a network of different
\nstakeholders including the own smart cities. In order to sustain such
\nequilibrium and respond to increasing stakeholder pressures about their
\nsocial impacts, firms are developing innovative approaches. In this
\ncontext, social and environmental innovations are creating new
\nopportunities and challenges that are still under-explored. The
\nintersection of these trends is generating new streams of research that
\nimply both opportunities and challenges for researchers and
\npractitioners.<\/p>\n

The SMS Conference Extension at Universidad Carlos
\nIII de Madrid will bring together a panel of distinct scholars of
\nvarious perspectives and experiences as well as prominent researchers
\ninterested in smart cities, the green movement and social
\nresponsibility. This extension pursues two main objectives: First, to
\ndiscuss and develop topical and future research avenues at the
\nintersection of smart cities and social responsibility. Second, to
\nenable networking and spur the exchange of ideas and experiences about
\nand beyond the extension theme.<\/p>\n

Smart cities and social
\nresponsibility have unique characteristics, opportunities and threats.
\nThese distinctive elements are all strategic issues that we seek to
\naddress during this workshop. Interesting questions that may be
\ndiscussed are for instance:<\/p>\n
