José María Marín is an Excellence Professor at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He received the Extraordinary Degree Award from the University of Murcia and a PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. In the past, he held academic affiliations with the Universidad Pompeu Fabra (Professor of Financial Economics and Accounting), Wharton School (Fulbright Senior Visiting Scholar), New York University (MEC Visiting Scholar), and IMDEA Ciencias Sociales (research professor). He has been president of the Spanish Finance Association (AEFIN) and director of the Center for Research in Financial Economics (CREF). In the past, he was a member of the Group of Economic Advisors (GEA) of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and of the Committee of Experts for the “Reform for the Sustainability of the Spanish Pension System”, and is currently a member of the Advisory Council of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIREF) and Director of the Doctoral Program in Business and Finance at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
Professor Marín has an extensive research record materialized in scientific articles published in internationally recognized journals such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Portfolio Management, etc. He has also written articles in books and is co-author of the book Economía Financiera, a textbook widely used as a reference in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in different countries. His main areas of research are the valuation of financial assets, portfolio and risk management, the analysis of conflicts of interest in financial markets and in the banking sector, and the study of insider trading and stock market crashes. His research activity has received attention in the media and has had a considerable impact on the regulation of financial markets, serving as a reference in the legislation of the American pension system (Pension Protection Act 2006) and accounting rules (SFAS 158).
Professor Marin has also worked as a consultant and as an economic expert in legal proceedings (expert witness) for both private companies and public institutions such as: ENDESA, Banco Santander, Abengoa, BBVA, Vodafone, Unión Fenosa Gas, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Central Bank (ECB), etc.
